The Ethiopian Singer/Songwriter Getachew Kassa is a bridge to the past and a connection to our parents. He is an indispensable part of our culture and tradition with a golden voice that serves as a gateway back to the golden age of Ethiopian music. Tilahun, Mahmud, Mulukn, few singers are bestowed first name status in Ethiopia. Getachew is such a name, Getachew is such a singer. This is a story of one part tizita, one part music, and one part redemption about a man who is our Getachew.

He has spent the last two decades in the US and now the legend is about to return home for good.

Shebapost had the privilege to sit with Getachew Kassa and talked to him about music and about the journey he is about to take,here are some of the stories he shared with us.

ሼባፖስት:ወደ ሙዚቃ አለም እንዴት መጡ?

ጌታቸዉ ካሣ:ወደ ሙዚቃ አለም ልገባ የቻልኩት የስድስት መት ልጅ አያለሁ አባቴ ሜትር ከግማሽ የሚሆን ሬድዮ ከላይ ሸክላ መጫወጥቻ ነበረው ብዙ ጊዜ የምሰማው የጣልያን ሙዚቃ ነበር ይአማርኛ ሙዚቃ ዎች ነበሩ ግን ለኔ ከባድ ነበሩ ግን፥፥ በተለይ አንድ ዘፍን ስለ አስመራ የዘፈኑት አዝማሪና አዝማሪና የሚለ ነበር ይህንን ዘፈን በስድስት አመቴ አዘፍነው ነበር ፥ ይህ ዘፈን ለኔ ወደሙዚቃ አለም መግባት ምክንያት ነው አላለሁ፥፥

ሼባፖስት:ወደ ሙዚቃ ኣለም ለመምጣት በወቅቱ የሚመለከትዋቸው ዘፋኆች  አነ ማን ነበሩ?

ጌታቸዉ ካሣ:በዛ ጊዘ ኣብዛኛው የምሰማቸው ሻይ ቤት ውስጥ ነበር የ ኣምስት ሳንቲም ሻይ ነበር የምንይዘው አነ አልቪስ ፕረስሊ ሊትል ሪቻርድ ሃሪ ቤላፎንቴ ባክ ቦን  የነ አሱን ዘፈን  አየሰማሁ ነው ወደ ሙዚቃ ኣለም የመታሁት ማለት አችላለሁ አትዮዽያ ዉስጥ ያሉ ዘፋኞች አነ ኣለማየሁ አሸቴ አነ ጥላሁን ገሠሠ ሌሎችም ነበሩ መስማት ጀመርኩ ሄጄሞ ደግሞ አነሱን ማየት ጀመርኩ አና በሙዚቃ  ኣለም ዉስት አነሱን ነው ማደንቀው ማለት አችላለሁ፥፥

ሼባፖስትመጀመሪያ የቀረጹት ዘፈን አና ከ የትኛው ባንድ ጋር ነበር?

ጌታቸዉ ካሣ:በበጣም ተወዳጅነትን ያተረፈው አመኛለሁ ነበር ሙዙቃ ባንድ ኣብረውኝ የሰሩት የ ፖሊስ ኦርኬስትራ ነበሩ ለመቅረጽም ወደ ሁለት ኣመት ወስዶብናል፥፥

ሼባፖስት:ቤተሰቦቾ  ምን ኣይነት ኣመለካከት ነበራቸው በእርሶ ሙዚቃ ላይ?

ጌታቸዉ ካሣ:ኣባቴ:ኣዝማሪ ብለህ ስም ለታስጠራ ነው በምንም ኣይሆንም በማለት ሲል አኔም ከቤት ጠፍቼ ወደ ሐረር ሄጄ ነበር ከሐረር ከተመለስኩ ብሗላ ነው መነጋገር አንኳን የቻልነው አባቴ ነጋዴ ነበር አና አንዲያውም ገንዝብ ልስጥህ ነጋዴ ሁን ወይ ተማር ምን ይመስለሃል ሲለኝ አኔ ከሙዚቃ ኣለም መውጣት ኣልችልም ስል መለስኩ ወደ ሂልተን ሆተል ከገባሁ በህዋላ ግን አራሱም ደነቀውና አለማወቄ ነው ብሎ በዛ ታረቅን፥፥
